Your cheapest customers are the ones you already have
Winning a new customer costs several times more than getting another job from someone who already knows you. Yet most service businesses collect email addresses and then do nothing with them.
The list of past customers and enquiries is the most undervalued asset in a service business. Used well, it produces repeat work and referrals at a fraction of the cost of advertising.
The mistake most businesses make
They send nothing for months, then blast a generic "we're still here" email that gets ignored. Or worse, they only email when they want to sell something.
Email works when it's regular and useful. A short, honest message once or twice a month keeps you in mind without annoying people.
What to actually send
- Seasonal reminders. "It's that time of year to check your heat pump." Simple, helpful, and it prompts calls.
- Tips and maintenance advice. A 60-second read that saves someone money makes them think of you when they need the real job done.
- Before and after stories. Show the work, not just the offer. People trust what they can see.
- A clear reason to call now. A small time-limited offer or a "we have two slots left this month" note creates urgency without being pushy.
Keep it short and plain
Fancy templates with six columns and stock photos often perform worse than a plain message that reads like it came from a person. The goal is to get a reply, not to win a design award.
Start small and stay consistent
Pick one message a month to start. Build a simple welcome sequence for new enquiries. Measure what gets opened and what gets replies, and do more of what works.
